CHEF ALEX GARCIA

Alex Garcia, the acclaimed New York chef, was born and raised in Cuba, and learned firsthand from his family the art of Cuban cuisine. He went on to study at Northeastern University and the Culinary Institute of America, where he was able to perfect his technique. He worked alongside chef Douglas Rodriguez in Florida and in New York, where they opened New York Times three star restaurant, Patria, before striking out on his own and earning rave reviews for his sassy, splashy Nuevo Latino hotspots, the former Erizo Latino, Soho, and the always crowd pleasing Calle Ocho. His creativity and personality earned him a weekly spot on the Food Network’s hit cooking show Melting Pot (2000-2003).

At Calle Ocho, where Garcia continues to pack the house nightly with his inventive and tasty creations, the menu is an encyclopedia of authentic ingredients and sauces that serves up a delicious Latino fare. New Yorkers have fallen in love with Latin cuisine, music and culture, here at Calle Ocho, Alex has created a singularly authentic and charming escape to Litltle Habana, on Columbus Avenue.

As one of the nation’s leading Latino chefs, Alex Garcia, has contributed to various Latino publications and has been a spokesperson for Goya and Rums of Puerto Rico. His great success in the culinary arts and his business savvy have made him a greatly sought after consultant for Carnival Cruise Lines, Walt Disney’s Disneyland, California Avocado Commission and Catena Wines among others. Alex is currently serving as Executive Consulting Chef at Latiknow.com, a network of resources, consulting and community for Latin cuisine and culture.

Garcia counts among one of his most cherished accomplishments the publication of In a Cuban Kitchen, Running Press 2003. Get ready to feel the rhythms and passions of Cuba and its flavorful cuisine, one of the hottest trends in food and drink. Whether you are a longtime connoisseur of Cuban cooking or a newcomer to its delightful dishes Alex’s In a Cuban Kitchen will help to broaden your appreciation of the country and its unique blend of flavors and cooking techniques.

The perfect blend of talent, drive and charisma that Alex Garcia embodies continues to deliver exciting and creative new culinary ventures. SAZON GOURMET MI TIERRA, due to debut in the Spring of 2006, is an exquisite blend of the best spices to give every dish that special and delectable Latino flavor.

Never eager to slow down Garcia is now returning to his old neighborhood in Soho and serving up an exciting and lively Fonda Latina menu with a late night twist, at the soon to open Novo. This latest hotspot promises to keep you coming back with its simple and flavorsome cuisine, its enticing sangria menu and a great service oriented and festive ambience.

Whether you are in the mood for a lively downtown evening or an Upper West side soiree Garcia has you covered. Alex is truly one of the few who stands out in the crowded New York City restaurant scene making both critics and locals stand up and take notice.
